Eid-el-Fitr: President Muhammadu Buhari hails peaceful handover of power, mocks doomsayers




President Buhari has said that the sacrifices Nigerians made in voting him again into office during the 2019 general election, will never be in vain. The President gave the assurance in his special Sallah message to celebrate the end of the Ramadan fast.

In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said before the 2019 elections, prophets of doom had predicted that the elections will not be peaceful. However, despite their predictions, Nigerians came out enmass to vote for him. He pledged to ensure that the voters feel the positive impact of his administration.

Guards allegedly kill Ghanaian Boss, daughter over unpaid salaries in Ondo (photos)




The Ondo state police command have arrested two security guards for killing their boss, 71 year old Kwakye Kwaku Richards, a Ghanaian, and his 27-year-old daughter, Kwakyw Tope, at his residence at Ojomo Akintan Estate on Ilesha/Owo expressway in Ondo State.

Parading the suspect before newsmen, the state Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie, said the suspects, Ayuba Idris, and Taisu Abubakar, both aged 20, were initially declared wanted by the police for killing the victims and were arrested in Kano and Sokoto states, respectively.

The suspects who are of Hausa and Fulani extractions, confessed that they killed their boss and daughter and dumped their corpse in a building in their estate. Their gross was that the man refused to pay them their 3-months salaries. Items found on them include mobile phones, laptop and clothes.

Apple To Shut Down ITUNES After 18 Years



It’s been over 18 years since iTunes was introduced at the 2001 Macworld Expo, offering a solution to an industry struggling with piracy. Since then, it has grown into a media behemoth, becoming a one-stop shop for users to consume media that includes music, movies, and TV.

But Apple is planning to divide these different types of media by replacing iTunes with three new apps: Music, TV, and Podcasts. The company has already decentralized media on both iPads and iPhones, which offer the trio of apps. 

Nigeria crashes out of U-20 World Cup after losing 2 - 1 to Senegal in Round of 16



The Flying Eagles of Nigeria on Monday, June 3 lost 2-1 to Senegal in a round of 16 game to crash out of the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup. 

Nigeria fell to two first-half goals from Senegal and although they pulled one back early in the second half, Paul Aigbogun's boys could not get an equaliser. 
The loss ends Nigeria’s 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup where they failed to sparkle after struggling to progress from the group stage.

US now demands social media accounts from visa applicants



The United States State Department has announced that anyone applying for a visa into the country will now have to submit their social media handles.

According to BBC, applicants will also have to submit their phone numbers and five years’ worth of email addresses.
The policy is said to be part of the state department’s effort to ensure national security and according to authorities, the policy would affect 14.7 million people annually.
Stating the reason for the proposal in 2018, the department said, “National security is our top priority when adjudicating visa applications, and every prospective traveler and immigrant to the United States undergoes extensive security screening.”

Ponzi Scheme: SwissGolden director, Michael Eke to remain in prison over N320m fraud charge




EFCC has arraigned the registered trustee of Micheno Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, Mr. Uno Michael Eke before Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court, sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, on a separate 74-count charge, for allegedly obtaining over N320 million (Three Hundred and Twenty Million) by false pretence from innocent Nigerians.

Eke, allegedly defrauded his victims through an alleged ponzi scheme by inducing his victims to invest in his Swissgolden packages, through his company, Micheno Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, under the false pretence of paying them 80 per cent return on investment within just 40 days.

With this enticing bait, Eke duped so many people through the scheme, and when his investors started calling for their capitals and expected interest, he made himself unreachable, both by telephone and in person.

Platini blasts FIFA president, says he has ‘no legitimacy’



The former head of European football Michel Platini has blasted FIFA President Gianni Infantino ahead of his re-election saying he has “no legitimacy” and that he previously mocked women’s football.
“He has no legitimacy, he is not credible as FIFA president,” Platini said in an interview with French sports daily L’Equipe and several other European newspapers.
There is no love lost between Platini, who was banned from football activities over a two million Swiss francs (1.8 million euros, $2 million) payment from FIFA, and Infantino, his former right-hand man.

Buhari Has Not Approved State Police, Says Presidency



The Presidency has denied reports claiming President Buhari has approved the formation of State police structures.

Reports were rife online earlier today with claims that the President after receiving the Report of the Presidential Panel on the Reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), gave the approval for the creation of a police force for states and local governments.

A statement released by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, this evening, said although the report suggested the introduction of state and local government police, the President is yet to assent to the recommendation.

The Niger State Police Command has arrested one Nasiru Musa, 30, of Salka village in the Magama Local Government Area of the state for allegedly strangling his seven months old daughter.
Musa was apprehended by police operatives attached to the Nasko Division following a tip-off.
It was learnt that the suspect on May 20, 2019, took his deceased child to an uncompleted building, where he allegedly strangled the infant while her mother was asleep.

Remains found in Arkansas identified as 4-year-old Maleah Davis after her stepdad confessed he killed her



The remains of a child’s body found on Friday in Arkansas have now been identified as those of Maleah Davis, a missing 4-year-old from Texas.

Sheriff James Singleton of Hempstead County, Arkansas, said Friday that a black trash bag with a foul odor and containing blood was found in Fulton.

Maleah was reported missing on the 4th of  May by her mother's former fiancé, Derion Vence who later confessed he murdered her.

The Lagos State Government has warned against the indiscriminate closure of public roads by Communities and Construction companies in the State without recourse to the Ministry of Transportation for approval.  

A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Taiwo Olufemi Salaam cautioned against the trend, insisting that Section 44 (2) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 grants only the Honourable Commissioner or the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transportation rights to approve such closure.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Monday, June 3, 2019, sentenced Calistus Obi, a former acting Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA to 42 years imprisonment.
Also sentenced to 42 years imprisonment is Alu Dismas, an aide to Patrick Akpobolokemi, a former Director-General, NIMASA.
Justice Olatoregun found the defendants guilty on counts two, three, four, six, seven and eight and sentenced them to seven years imprisonment each on each count.
The Judge, however, gave the convicts an "option of fine" of N42 million on each of the count. Justice Olatoregun also imposed a N10 million fine on the third and fourth convicts: Global Sea Investment and Grand Pact Limited.
The convicts were arraigned on April 12, 2016 on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, conversion, and money laundering to the tune of N136m.

A transgender murderer has been moved from a female prison to a male prison after having sex with an inmate. 

Kayleigh Woods had been serving a 26-year sentence at HMP Hewell in Worcestershire after slashing her flatmate’s throat in 2016. Shortly after arriving the prison in 2017, she requested a transfer to a female prison. Her request was granted, with officials at the Transgender Case Board taking into account she had not committed a sexual offence so was deemed to pose little risk. But only few weeks after she had been at the new prison, prison authorities found her naked with another convict.

Tragedy as trailer crushes female LASTMA officer to death (Graphic Photo)



A female officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, was crushed to death by a trailer in the Apapa arae of Lagos state on Saturday evening May 25th.

The deceased identified as Arogundade Remilekun, was said to be at the back of the truck directing traffic when the truck driver reversed. Unknown to him, Arogundade was behind his truck. She was crushed and died instantly.

Suspected kidnappers who attempted to abduct a pastor of the Redeeed Christian Church of God in Edo state yesterday Sunday May 26th, were apprehended and handed over to the police by students of the Benin Technical College (BTC) and members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Eyewitnesses say the suspects had earlier snatched a Toyota Camry car from its owner, but later abandoned it behind Church of God Mission International (CGMi), in the area. They proceeded to the Redeemed Christian Church God (RCCG), where they dispossessed worshippers of their money, phones, other valuables, abducted the pastor, and whisked him away in his Nissan Xtera SUV with registration Number, LAGOS: EKY 353 CA.

Luck, however, ran out of the three-man gang when the students, the vigilante men and some of the worshippers gave them a hot chase, barricaded their vehicle, rescued the pastor and apprehended the kidnappers. They were immediately handed over to men of the Okhoro Divisional Police station.

President Trump became the first foreign leader to meet with Japan's new emperor at a ceremony in Tokyo on Monday morning. 
Trump met Emperor Naruhito at a ceremony full of pageantry at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. It is part of a lavish state visit to Japan by Trump that has also featured a visit to a sumu wrestling match on Sunday.
Trump is set to meet with Japan Prime Minister Abe later on Monday and will also attend a state banquet with the emperor later in the evening.

Nobel-winning physicist Murray Gell-Man dies at 89



Murray Gell-Mann, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist who brought order to the universe by helping discover and classify subatomic particles, has died at the age of 89. Gell-Mann died Friday at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His death was confirmed by the Santa Fe Institute, where he held the title of distinguished fellow, and the California Institute of Technology, where he taught for decades. The cause was not disclosed.
Gell-Mann transformed physics by devising a method for sorting subatomic particles into simple groups of eight — based on electric charge, spin and other characteristics. He called his method the “eightfold way” after the Buddhist Eightfold Path to enlightenment.

Brazil: Prison riot in Amazonas state leaves at least 15 dead

There was no information about any escapes. The same prison was the scene of a severe riot in January 2017 that killed 56 people.




Fighting erupted among inmates at a prison in the northern state of Amazonas on Sunday, and at least 15 people died before the riot was brought under control, authorities said.

The state prison secretary said in a statement that prisoners began fighting among themselves around noon, and security reinforcements were rushed to the Anisio Jobim Prison Complex in the state capital of Manaus.

Iraq sentences three French Islamic State group members to death




An Iraqi court on Sunday sentenced three French citizens to death after they were found guilty of joining the Islamic State group, the first IS members from France to be handed capital punishment, a court official said.

Captured in Syria by a US-backed force fighting the jihadists, Kevin Gonot, Leonard Lopez and Salim Machou were transferred to Iraq for trial. They have 30 days to appeal.
Iraq has taken custody of thousands of jihadists repatriated in recent months from neighbouring Syria, where they were caught by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces during the battle to destroy the IS “caliphate”.

Woman nabbed for attempting to smuggle 39 wraps of Indian hemp into Kano prison


The Nigerian Prison Service in Kano state have arrested a woman, Rifkatu Anthony, pictured above, for trying to smuggle 39 wraps of Indian Hemps into the prison.  
The details of the arrest was contained in a statement released by prison authorities.

Trump ban on Huawei: Founder Ren opposes Chinese revenge vs Apple



Even as Huawei faces an uncertain future given the US President Donald Trump’s ban on the company trading with other US technology majors, the founder of the Chinese firm has said he would not support any ban on Apple in China. Huawei founder Ren Zhengei told Bloomberg News in that he was against any potential China ban Apple.

Speculation is that China could retaliate against the US ban of Huawei by banning some US companies in the country, and that Apple could possibly face this. Goldman Sachs analysts are already estimating that Apple will lose nearly a third of its profit if China banned its products. But the Huawei founder does not think this will happen.

Maurizio Sarri 'agrees to become new Juventus manager on £6m deal'




Chelsea boss, Maurizio Sarri has reportedly agreed on terms to take over at Juventus.

The Italian club is looking for a new manager following the announcement that Massimiliano Allegri will depart at the end of the season.

Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho were also reported options for Juventus, but according to SNAI sportnews, Sarri has already reached an agreement with the club to replace Allegri.

Randy lovers paraded in Borno state for having sex in public



The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps says it has arrested two people in Maiduguri, Borno over illicit intercourse in public.

Speaking to the media, The Commandant of the Corps, Mr Abdullahi Ibrahim disclosed that the suspects were a 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl. He said the pair were arrested after they were seen engaged in the illicit activity by men of the Civilian Joint Task Force who promptly informed the NSCDC. 

Trump: Rolling Thunder returning to DC next year



President Trump said in a tweet early Sunday that the Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally will return to Washington, D.C. next year, following news that the veterans' advocacy group had encountered trouble obtaining permits for the event.
"The Great Patriots of Rolling Thunder WILL be coming back to Washington, D.C. next year, & hopefully for many years to come,” Trump tweeted.

"It is where they want to be, & where they should be. Have a wonderful time today, he added. “Thank you to our great men & women of the Pentagon for working it out!”
