Disaster As Tornado hits Gauteng, cause severe damages as reported in Tembisa

Three people have been injured after a roof collapsed at the Phumulani Mall in Tembisa, Gauteng.

Ekurhuleni emergency service's William Ntladi said EMS personnel accounted for three people with minor injuries at this stage.

“The roof at the mall has been blown off and most of the damage was caused by water that entered the mall. Many shops were affected and vehicles were damaged. Some vehicle were rolled over by the storm,” he said.

Ntladi said the unusual weather phenomenon happened at 15;40 and only lasted about 20 seconds.

Emergency services were on the scene and customers were being evacuated.

There have been several sightings of a tornado in the area.

The Tembisa hospital was also affected by the tornado.

“We can confirm that the [Tembisa] hospital was affected by the tornado this afternoon.

“Employees' vehicles were damaged and carports were also damaged,” said Gauteng health department spokesman, Steve Mabona.

Mabona added that trees were uprooted causing damage to three ambulances.

“No person or patients were injured. Parts of the hospital's roof were affected but there was no impact,” Mabona said.

Sources at OR Tambo International Airport indicated there had been no disruption to flight plans or services due to the adverse weather conditions..
