Man arrested over fatal stabbing of woman in North Hobart supermarket

Police have arrested a man over the death of a woman stabbed during an alleged supermarket robbery in North Hobart on Saturday.

The attack occurred just after midday yesterday at the A&B Food Store on Elizabeth Street in North Hobart.

The 68-year-old victim, who owned the store and was working at the time, received wounds to her neck and upper body.

She was treated at the scene by ambulance officers before being taken to Royal Hobart Hospital, where she died a short time later.

After a police investigation a 35-year-old man was arrested. He has yet to be formally charged.

Detective Inspector Ian Whish-Wilson from the Hobart CIB said robbery was a probable motive.

"It is believed that a metal cash draw has been taken from the scene," he said.

"We believe at the moment that it's probably a hold-up gone wrong.

"The family is understandably very upset."

Police had interviewed staff from neighbouring shops and cafes who were shaken up by the incident.
