Priest Killed in During Hostage Drama at Church in France

An elderly priest was "assassinated" and another person seriously wounded when attackers armed with knives took hostages during morning Mass at a church in France early Tuesday.

Officers ended the siege and the hostage-takers were "neutralized" at the church in the town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, police said.

The victim was named by Archbishop of Rouen Dominique Lebrun as Father Jacques Hamel, 84.

The killing is being investigated by anti-terrorism police in Paris, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told reporters. "A person was assassinated and another seriously injured," he said.

French President Francois Hollande and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve traveled to the town, which is located near Rouen in Normandy.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said he was horrified by the "barbaric" attack.

Police appealed on social media for those at the scene not to take pictures or disturb the work of officers there.

Father Jacques Hamel was ordained in 1958... May his soul Rest in Peace (Amen).
