The northeastern region of Honshu, the biggest island of Japan, has braced itself for the arrival of Typhoon Lionrock, which will be the third to hit Japan in just over a week.
The approaching storm has so far prompted authorities to close all schools in the area and to cancel some 110 flights to and from the region and Hokkaido Island.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) urged people to be alert to the possibility of landslides and floods from heavy rainfall in the coming hours.
According to JMA's data, Linrock - the 10th typhoon recorded during the 2016 Pacific hurricane season - was found at 9.45am local time 170 kilometres from the eastern coastal town Choshi.
Although it has weakened, it is still classified as "strong", packing winds of up to 180km/h.
Lionrock will reach the northeast of China on Wednesday after crossing over and the Sea of Japan.
