Apple made the announcement late on Thursday that the iPhone 7 Plus and jet-black iPhone 7 models were not available.
By that stage, some fans had already been waiting for close to 36 hours.
One dedicated Sydney student, who was offered $2500 for his spot in line but graciously declined, said he was disappointed that his first choice was sold out.
“The 7 Plus and the jet-blacks are sold out therefore making my wait somewhat redundant,” Marcus Barsoum told 7 News.
But despite his seemingly pointless wait, he stuck around to claim a standard-sized iPhone.
Another man who was at the front of the line was filmed angrily throwing his tent and camping chair into a nearby rubbish bin.
Initial supplies of the Plus model in all colours were sold out before the products hit shelves, with the jet-black version of the smaller iPhone 7 also unavailable.
"We sincerely appreciate our customers' patience as we work hard to get the new iPhone into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said in a statement.
